Turn off the lights. Snuggle up in your coziest blanket, and prepare yourself to be frightened.
I love scary stories. I mean, I am absolutely fascinated with spooky, unsettling tales!
Even though I will admit I can sometimes be afraid of the dark… hey, we all have our fears.
Even when I was young, I was super into the weird and creepy tales. I read all the Goosebumps novels, read Scary stories to tell in the dark, watched every episode of Are you afraid of the dark and was in love with this show on YTV called Freaky Stories which was almost like a “twilight zone” but for children. But boy did it ever have the creepiest animations!
So for today’s #spooktober blog post, I wanted to gather some of my favorite scary stories and share them with you… should you have the courage to read them that is.
The Russian Sleep Experiment
This is a scary one, trust me. Still a super intriguing read, but will have you feeling uneasy.
Whether you read the text or listen to a narrated video, you will still experience the same unsettling feelings from the events of the experiment. If you’re brave enough, go over to Creepypasta and read the experiment for yourself…
…or feel free to watch CreepsMcPasta’s narration of the story (if you dare.)
As someone who works in the games industry and has a background in psychology, I find this “urban legend” to be incredibly fascinating, and the way in which this story is told makes you think there could be some truth in it…
I don’t want to give too much away about this one so if you’re curious, you can read the story over on Creepypasta or check out the video below, narrated by CreepReads.
As well, the Hulu Series Dimension 404 aired an episode titled “Polybius” which was based on the story. If you haven’t checked out the Hulu series yet, I highly recommend Dimension 404. It’s similar to Black Mirror and Twilight Zone, just a tad bit lighter in subject matter. Let me know what you think if you do get a moment to watch the show!
I only discovered these “case files” back in 2017, when a coworker asked if I had heard of them before? (You know, since I expressed my absolute love of the macabre and the unexplainable). Curious as I am, I bit and fell down a rabbit hole of the most horrific and terrifying research descriptions of “classified (sometimes deadly) objects” to be imagined. I asked for recommendations of SCP files to read and boy, did I get a recommendation all right! I spent hours reading and combing through the ones I found the most unnerving.
If you’re interested, I highly suggest you check out the SCP Foundation site and explore the vast amount of SCPs out there. I’m sure you will stumble upon a SCP case file that will have you looking behind your shoulder or checking under your bed. I mean, I’ve personally found there are a couple of SCPs that are utterly terrifying: SCP-087 and SCP-198 to be specific. But of course there are thousands of these SCP files to read through and so many other creepy and unsettling ones to discover (if you’re brave enough.)
What if you remembered one day, a really “strange” show from your childhood, and reached out via the internet to see if others remembered it too. What if a message forum was created that discussed this so-called “creepy” children’s show and some very vivid recollections of the events in the episodes. Then, what if you discovered there was never a television show of that nature to begin with…
This story had me completely hooked when I first read it, as I’m all about the nostalgic and the weird. Plus, the mystery behind the show and then, even stranger the ending… where you’re left with even more questions than answers.
If you haven’t heard this story, here’s a narrated video by MrCreepyPasta.
And if you’re interested in a new tv series to check out, look into the show Channel Zero, which is based off of this Creepypasta (and other creepy tales.)
The Elevator Ritual
Simply put, this is a “ritual” you perform alone, using an elevator, that could take you to the “Otherworld” (if completed correctly of course.) It comes off like a silly sleepover game you’d play, but when reading this creepypasta I really got chills. In fact, it inspired me to begin writing a horror script!
If you have access to a building with at least 10 floors and an elevator, you can attempt this ritual at your own risk. However, I do NOT recommend it. Just read about the ritual instead.
If you took the time to read this blog post, my heart is full. Do you have any favorite scary stories to share? If so, let’s continue in the comments below (perhaps with a nice cup of coffee, heh.)
